For as long as I can remember I’ve been mesmerized by the sight of Rush Rhees Tower atop University of Rochester‘s River Campus library. At 186 feet high, this imposing monument (containing a set of imported Dutch bells that comprise the largest musical instrument in the city) is unforgettable. I thoroughly enjoyed pouring over the breathtaking level of architectural detail adorning this Greek Revival beauty.
I’ve always been struck by the dramatic juxtaposition between the cool cast shadows falling from industrial glass and limestone at midday; and the serene electric warmth and quiet comfort broadcast by that same structure at night. With my ongoing series of illustrated posters I’ve tried to capture that vibrant duality as seen in my favorite local landmarks by day and by night.
